On May 6, 2025, Uks coordinated Pakistan’s participation in the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) for the fourth time, as part of a global effort across 100+ countries to assess gender representation in news media.
Monitoring covered nine newspapers, six TV news channels, Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), six news-based websites, and four Twitter/X handles. The process was carried out by 13 trained volunteers, including Uks staff, journalists, and university students. Uks conducted mock sessions ahead of the activity to train participants in the GMMP methodology, ensuring consistency and credibility in data collection.
This year’s edition, GMMP+30, marked 30 years since the project’s inception, and expanded its focus to include media coverage of gender-based violence, marginalized voices, and gender and technology.
With nearly three decades of experience monitoring media through a gender lens, Uks brought both leadership and expertise to the initiative. The activity was carried out voluntarily and without external funding.
Findings from Pakistan will contribute to the global GMMP report, with highlights to be presented at the UN General Assembly in September and the full report launched on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
